About Our Firm
I joined Simon, Fitzgerald, Cooke, Reed and Welch in 1977, and have been practicing bankruptcy law in Shreveport for the last 30 years. One of my partners, Paul Cooke, was with the firm when I joined. Paul and I are the older attorneys now. Our mentor, Archie Simon, was one of the premier bankruptcy attorneys in Louisiana and one of the original senior partners in Simon, Fitzgerald, Cooke, Reed & Welch. The Simon, Fitzgerald firm has been involved in the practice of bankruptcy law for well over 50 years, and we trace the original firm back to 1907.
Over the years we have handled all types of bankruptcy matters, representing debtors, creditors and trustees of bankruptcy. However, since 1999 we have primarily represented individuals and small businesses in Chapter 13 and Chapter 7. A lot has changed over the last 50 years. Most households now rely on two incomes. Credit is a vital part of everyday life. Far too many of us are living payday to payday. Even the slightest disruption in income or an unexpected expense can result in major financial problems.

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy
The most common form of bankruptcy filed in Louisiana is Chapter 13. It does not erase debts, but provides immediate relief from creditors, and may allow the filer to avoid foreclosure or repossession.
In a Chapter 13, you are not usually required to pay the attorney fees up front — they can be included in your repayment plan. If needed you may pay your court filing fees in installments as well.
